Japanese Handle - Magnolia/Buffalo Horn (octagon)
Magnolia wood is one of the most popular woods used for traditional wa Japanese handles - it’s lightweight and has an extremely low percentage of etheric oils and resins inside. It’s subtle in color (but will get darker with use) and a bit more delicate than other woods for maintaining, but also leaves almost no smell or taste on the hand (and subsequently on the food).
The ferrule of this octagonally shaped handle is made out of buffalo horn which can withstand bigger forces than wood. It is a natural material most similar to wood in terms of how much it shrinks and expands under different temperatures.
Buffalo horn is a natural material that can range in color - in 90% of the cases it’s deep black (with subtle lines) and the rest span from brown to light brown and sometimes even completely beige (also called blonde). If you want a special color let us know and we’ll try to accommodate you.
